Our house coffee

A medium-dark roasted mix of Honduran and Brazilian beans (La Abuja, Fazenda Jacaranda, Maria Branca) gives a drink with big body and dark chocolate. The Honduras beans are from a collective providing careers for women in a country that has one of the lowest gender equality balances in the world.

James Gourmet Coffee’s roastery is in Ross-on-Wye, an hour away from Stroud. They eschew marketing in favour of what really matters: sourcing coffee directly from farmers at a fair (and above Fairtrade) price, never compromising on taste, and always looking at how to be more sustainable.

Coffee for home? We have bags of beans or ground coffee.

Guest coffee and decaffeinated

Nutty milk chocolate, biscuit. Natural sweetness. Very easy to drink. Fazenda de Mata, Finca Serbia and Roberto Ortiz beans from Brazil, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

Coaltown roasters is based in South Wales, bringing work to a town that once provided jobs in coal. A B-Corp certified company, they trade directly with small farmers, use compostable coffee bags, and their business runs on 100% renewable energy.

Our milk(s)

DAIRY: Winner of three Great Taste awards, Jess’s Ladies supplies us with organic milk from their farm just a few miles away in Hardwicke. To stay as natural as possible the milk is not homogenised, meaning it does not go through a mechanical process to break up the fat molecules. It is typically higher in Omega 3 than many supermarket milks.

PLANT-BASED: Oat, almond, coconut and soy is available, organic when we can get it (the choice has gone down recently). Almonds usually come from Italy (so not contributing to droughts and bee deaths in California) and the soy from France – so no need to worry about rain forests being cut down to plant soy.

Whatever the milk, we sometimes have to pop out to a nearby shop for emergency supplies so brands may change, but we always aim for organic.

Other hot drinks

Loose leaf and bagged tea is available including a good range of herbals.

We make our own hot chocolate – simply Fairtrade Rainforest Alliance cocoa and Fairtrade sugar (both FairTrade), or we can do just cocoa.

Or maybe try our chai (warming spices, no caffeine), turmeric and ginger latte, or a ceremonial-grade matcha latte.

Like our coffee, all these drinks except chai are organic.

Syrups and sugars.

Organic caramel, vanilla, and almond syrup is available, and possibly other flavours. We don’t have sugar-free syrups because their weird ingredients don’t really fit with our ethos of natural food.

Sugar and sweetener sachets are not organic (they are virtually impossible to get hold of) but we have organic FairTrade raw cane sugar behind the counter if you want it.
